The Approaching Olympic Games: A Great Opportunity - or Risk
Honourable President Hu,
I am writing to you to draw your attention to the prospects of the approaching Olympic Games in China.
The Olympic Games is not only the biggest sports event of the world, it is the manifestation of the highest human values, such as sportsmanship, brotherly respect and tolerance – a symbol of humanity.
To apply for the act of host for The Olympic Games without carrying out real improvements of the human right situation could mean facing a publicity suicide; showing China as an underdeveloped nation regarding to human right matters.
To avoid that China could carry out improvements before The Olympic Games, as opening negotiations with the Tibetan government-in-excile on the issue of self-government in Tibet and the release of the Panchen Lama.
China has a lot to gain by doing so. Both great human and economical resources can be released and China appear as a society of the future, which will be for the benefit of both economic and cultural relations to other nations.
It is my hope for humanity, that we all will be able to live in peace and harmony, disregarding to differences in form of government, religion etc. – and that we will not oppress the happiness and freedom of other people.
With best wishes for the New Year, hoping that conditions will improve and the past be left behind, so that The Olympic Games will turn out to be a celebration of the sports – as it is supposed to be.
Respectfully yours,
